Who's packing in the Legislature? You might be surprised. Asked to describe the average handgun owner, some will conjure the image of an upstate, conservative Republican male. But the short list of lawmakers with handgun permits manages to reflect New York's diversity at least a little with men and women, conservatives and liberals represented, albeit not in equal numbers.

The forthcoming Will Ferrell-Mark Wahlberg flick The Other Guys may yet be riddled with pot shots from film critics. Poor Ferrell and Wahlberg -- on Muni, they can't shoot back. While the official poster for the film features a maniacal Ferrell and the menacing Wahlberg sailing through the air, guns drawn, the version on Muni vehicles and in stations features Ferrell brandishing a vial of pepper spray and Wahlberg relying upon his bare fists. This is not a coincidence.

Residents of public housing in Wilmington will now be allowed to legally keep firearms in their units. The Wilmington Housing Authority suspended its ban on firearm ownership by tenants because of a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision and a National Rifle Association funded lawsuit filed in May that charges the ban is unconstitutional, according to attorneys and officials.

This November, when Kansans vote for legislators and a new governor, they will also be asked to amend the Kansas State Constitution to give Kansans the right to own a gun.

At midnight on July 31, the Massachusetts Legislature ended formal sessions for the year and I am happy to announce that the Governor's one gun a month bill, H.4102, which we have followed closely in this column, never came out of the House Ways and Means Committee for a vote.

It's not news that I don't want a gun in my house. It's also no secret that I will defend your right to have a gun if you want one. I believe in the Second Amendment, but I am selfish, too. I'll tell you why in a bit.

Perhaps you haven't noticed, but there's a gun battle going on in Kansas. Don't feel bad if you haven't. The two sides don't even agree what's in the crosshairs. The National Rifle Association says the integrity of the Constitution is on the line.

By unanimous consent, the U.S. Senate on Thursday passed H.R. 5552 -- the Firearms Excise Tax Improvement Act -- sponsored by Congressmen Ron Kind (D-WI) and Paul Ryan (R-WI).

Earlier this week, Assembly Bill 1810 was placed in the suspense file by the Senate Appropriations Committee. However, AB1810 could be resurrected in a special hearing next week. AB1810 would establish a registration system, similar to the one currently in place for handguns, for all newly-acquired long guns. This legislation would require the make, model and serial number of the firearm as well as the identifying information of the purchaser to be recorded and kept on file by the California Attorney General’s office. Imagine this news headline: “School shooter apologizes not for killing but for violating CU campus gun ban.” Preposterous, right? Not to some members of the CU Boulder faculty. A recent motion from the Boulder Faculty Assembly supports a campus gun ban as if someone intent on killing would comply with a campus gun ban, let alone regret breaking one.

Fifteen years after concealed handguns were legalized in Texas, more people are packing heat around Houston than anywhere else in the state. In some areas, one out of every 55 residents is licensed to carry a concealed weapon.

A posse of armed citizens captured a wanted criminal in Ashtabula County, Ohio. Less than four months earlier, Ashtabula County Judge Alfred Mackey told residents to arm themselves due to law enforcement budget cuts.

Say the National Rifle Association and many recall the image of Charlton Heston holding a rifle and proclaiming, "From my cold dead hands." Today's face of NRA members is growing considerably younger but are nevertheless just as vigilant when it comes to defending the Second Amendment.
