Mississippi: DeSoto County Board of Supervisors to Continue Hearing Public Comment on Revised Firearms Ordinance Later This Month

Based on concerns raised and input by local gun owners, sportsmen and your NRA-ILA, the DeSoto County Board of Supervisors revised their proposed ordinance that originally would have restricted the possession, as well as the discharge, of firearms in greenways, parks and other recreational areas managed by the county. The revised ordinance was initially put forth for public comment in October. The revised ordinance now focuses only on the reckless discharge of firearms in these areas and does not attack self-defense rights, law-abiding concealed carry permit holders or individuals legally transporting firearms in their private motor vehicles.  A copy of the revised ordinance can be viewed here.

Oregon: Management Plan Recommends Opening Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge to Hunting

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has released a plan to guide management of the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge for the next 15 years.  The Refuge’s five units are located in the Tualatin River basin near Portland.   Currently there is no hunting on the 2,000 acres that the Service has acquired, as explained in Alternative 1 (current management).  However, under Alternatives 2 and 3 a junior waterfowl hunt is planned in the Riverboat Unit and opportunities for hunting would be explored for the Wapato Lake Unit when an adequate land base is acquired and habitat restoration decisions are made. 

Texas: Management Plan Recommends Opening Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge to Hunting

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has released a plan to guide management of the Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge for the next 15 years.  The 7,677-acre Refuge is located approximately 30 miles southwest of Amarillo.  The primary purpose of the Refuge is to protect wintering waterfowl and short-grass prairie habitat.  Currently there is no hunting permitted on the Refuge, as explained in Alternative A (current management).  However, under Alternative B (Improved Habitat Management and Public Use) and Alternative C (Optimal habitat management and public use), hunting would be introduced to the Refuge.   The plan can be read online here.

Oklahoma: New law spurs gun permits

Wanted criminal shot by 69-year-old homeowner, The Modesto Bee, Modesto, Calif. 11/05/12

While driving a car he stole less than 15 minutes earlier, a thief in Ceres, Calif. spotted a 69-year-old homeowner in his garage and attempted to rob him with a knife. The homeowner responded by retrieving a nearby .38-caliber handgun and shooting the criminal twice. The wounded robber fled the home but was captured by police in a nearby yard. An investigation revealed that the criminal already had a warrant out for his arrest, resulting from his lack of participation in a court ordered alternative work program.
